View 27: Summer Joy!

School's Out for Summer

On a beach on the eastern shore of Lake Ontario, these girls were jumping in celebration of the unoffical start of summer over the Memorial Day (US) weekend in May, 2008. One of the girls mother was trying to capture this with a small Point & Shot type of camera and wasn’t having too much luck. This was the sixth and last attempt which I did get as I had gotten in behind to see if I could do better with my Nikon D70. I think I did alright.

On a personal note, because of some issues this past week, I was not able to get out and get some photos for the blog.

26 Views…Half Way There!

Posted by Scott Thomas Photography on June 25, 2008

26 Views Collage

It doesn’t look like much when put all together, does it? For those of you counting, there is more than 26 photos as on 3 occasions I featured 2 photos in a view. The photos are in order from View 1 to View 26. I am still amazed at those who are doing a photo-a-day blog as it was hard sometimes to come up with ideas and photos once a week. I hope you have enjoyed the weekly posts nether the less.

Along the way I’ve done a couple of Photo Essays which have gotten very good feedback. I’ll be putting together more as the year progresses.

I’ve recently added an RSS Feed to the blog per a guest’s request. Got off on the wrong foot with it but it’s working now. You can see it under the Search box on the right-hand sidebar.

This week I am opening the 52 Views of 2008 Print Shop where you can purchase prints and other photo gift items. I haven’t added all the featured photos and none of the smaller photos so, if you don’t see what you are looking for, send me an email or comment and I can add it for you.

I have enjoyed conversing with those who have left comments and seeing what other very talented fellow bloggers are doing. The Internet is still a very new technology in the grand scheme of Man’s history on Earth. The best is yet to come.

View 25: Centrifugal Force

Centrifugal Force

Centrifugal force (from Latin centrum “center” and fugere “to flee”) is an apparent force acting outward from the axis of a rotating reference frame. In the case of the little boy above, he is learning how the moving ride is forcing him firmly against the side of the ride vehicle as it spins. This picture was taken at last weekend’s Jamesville Balloonfest where they had many carnival rides, games, gravity games, food and gift vendors.

When I was there, the weather and lighting wasn’t the best. The hot air balloons where inflated but did not launch. The scheduled balloon glow was also cancelled due to the threat of thunder storms a few miles west of the launching grounds. I did manage a few images…

View 24: A River Runs Through It

Seneca River

Over the past ten years, my village of Baldwinsville has undergone a transformation using the natural resource of the Seneca River and the Man-made Erie Canal to bring in more people to the village. New restaurants, an inn, festivals, concerts and fireworks bring in tourists, fishermen, boaters and village locals back into the downtown and river area. This is much different than 100 years ago when the river and canal meant power and transportation for the industries of Baldwinsville but, the results are the same, more opportunities for entrepreneurs to build a business and enjoyment of the river for everyone else.

Wildlife still call the Seneca River home like this Mallard Duck. Fishing is a major draw from bass to record-setting carp. Erie Canal Lock 24 is open for business and is one of the busiest on the Erie Canal system. Many of the boaters stop by the Lock 24 Restaurant to have a meal and listen to entertainers like Dr. Paul on warm evenings from Spring to Fall.

Male Wood Duck protecting the nesting box.

Male wood duck protecting the nest (from a nearby zoo worker wading around the pond) taken in the Rosamond Gifford Zoo in Syracuse, NY. I used a Nikon SB-600 flash at +3 and was rewarded with being able to see the female in the nesting box.

I finally got a picture of the one of the zoo’s Red Wolves. The viewing area for them is above the wolf’s enclosure which has a lot of trees and brush for them to hide under. The Eastern Screech Owl was out being shown by one of the zoo’s handlers for the bird show. Another first was getting a nice portrait of the Northern River Otter who is usually curled up sleeping on me. This time he was kind enough to pose.
