Tulips in Black Tulips in White

After reading how to photograph flowers in Scott Kelby’s The Digital Photography Book (pages 30, 31), I decided to try my hand with some tulips which my daughter had delivered earlier this week. Around here, it’s going to be another month before any tulips will be blooming outside.

While I didn’t have any black fabric handy, I instead made use of my house coat. Had trouble getting it flat so there’s still some light there. I bought a white poster board for the white background picture. I used a nearby window for the main light source and a white reflector to fill in the shadows. I used Apple’s Aperture 2 to process the final images.

Max

Meet my Sister-In-Law’s dog, Max.  Max is a Cockapoo and a cute little guy.  He wasn’t sure about the lens I was pointing at him as he sat in his owner’s lap.  The flash reflected off the sweater she was wearing and gave Max a nice colored fringe about his head.

View 12: Toe Save

Goalie making a toe save.
The Rochester Americans goalie Tyler Plante makes a save during a Syracuse Crunch game on Friday, March 14. Plante was a busy guy as Syracuse dominated the game after a slow start and won the game 3-0. Even though the lighting is not great in the old War Memorial, I had a lot of fun taking pictures from my seat which I always get near the north end a few feet off the ice surface.

View 11: Winter Blues

Winter Blues

March is a transition month in upstate New York. One day holds the promise of Spring with warm breezes and sunshine while the next brings cold, blusterly winds and inches of Lake Effect snow like yesterday. The sun still managed to poke through in the late afternoon to stream through the woods behind my house. I emphasized the blue light of the snow with my camera’s white balance. I get shivers looking at it.

View 10: Let’s Make Noise!!!

Posted by Scott Thomas Photography on March 3, 2008

Screamers

Took in another Syracuse University Orange Women’s Basketball game last week. It was another exciting game with SU winning on a three-pointer by Erica Morrow with eighteen seconds left to play.

At one point, SU was losing by twelve points with eleven minutes to play. The coach took a time out and challenged his players to dig down and win. With the help of the crowd, including the four girls who sat behind me (pictured above), SU came back for the victory. My ears rang all the next day from their screaming when the scoreboard operator asked for noise!
